Early responding to traumatic events.
How to respond optimally following traumatic events remains a Holy Grail. A number of early interventions lack evidence of effect. Practical, pragmatic support provided in an empathic manner is likely to be an appropriate initial response and complement the high levels of resilience shown by individuals exposed to traumatic events.
متن کاملSeasonality and structural breaks: NZ visitor arrivals and 9/11
We analyse monthly short term visitor arrival time series for New Zealand, to assess the effect of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks. We demonstrate that while some historical events have had a marked structural effect on trends in those arrivals, 9/11 was not one of these. Our conclusions are drawn on the basis of an initial nonparametric analysis, followed by a new iterative approach to...
متن کاملUnderstanding and responding to adverse events.
An adverse outcome for a patient is difficult, sometimes traumatic, for all concerned. Such incidents pose considerable challenges to an organization, both in terms of the need to respond intelligently to their occurrence and in terms of the need to deal with their aftermath. The challenge is to find a way forward that provides the necessary support for the people involved while ensuring that t...
متن کاملModelling seasonality and multiple structural breaks. Did 9/11 affect visitor arrivals to NZ?
We demonstrate the poor performance, with seasonal data, of existing methods for endogenously dating multiple structural breaks. Motivated by iterative nonparametric techniques, we present a new approach for estimating parametric structural break models that performs well. We suggest that iterative estimation methods are a simple but important feature of this approach to seasonal modelling. The...
متن کاملAffective and cardiovascular responding to unpleasant events from adolescence to old age: complexity of events matters.
Two studies investigated the overpowering hypothesis as a possible explanation for the currently inconclusive empirical picture on age differences in affective responding to unpleasant events. The overpowering hypothesis predicts that age differences in affective responding are particularly evident in highly resource-demanding situations that overtax older adults' capacities. In Study 1, we use...
